I would keep digging. The Meta data center schedule of construction has them building the data centre first and then adding their power plant after three years. So it would draw from the Provincial Grid for three years before or if they even build their power plant. AESO is correct in protecting the grid especially after last January's close call. Shaun Newman #1053 Minute 37:01 did a podcast with a brilliant young man Hakeem Anwar out of the states who has been watching these data centers grow and the folow on issues. Danielle Smith coined the term regarding data Centers is "Bring your Own Power" which I suspect will vanish if she needs the proposed investment to stay in power. I agree with Ian’s comments. Here is again what I stated earlier, What will they be used for. That question seems to be unanswered too. Danielle wanted IT to come to Alberta, and while you can try to include data centers in that offer, I do not believe Albertans saw that statement from the Premier as including these data centers. There are thousands of these data centers in the US. What can we glean from their experience? Power is one thing, everything else that can be asked and already exists is another. Noise, water, heat domes, effects on wildlife and human life, etc., has not. We absolutely do not have to reinvent the wheel, when our neighbour's to the south can illustrate a boldly coloured picture.
My other thoughts are the price tag to Albertans, and how that will either be paid by future generations, or benefits them in the future. I just don’t get the analysis. What I see is we give up a lot to get some kind of recognition along with the added benefit of having AI think for us, and give up absolutely, in time, our rights, our wild and beautiful parts of Alberta for what? Maybe we just need to unplug more instead of ramping it up more.

Yes, please, keep looking into these data centres. You mentioned the ones already operating and besides the 37 projects in the AESO queue (hyperscalers, requiring 75+MW, the BYOP ones) did you know there are dozens of smaller colocations (5+MW) that bypass the AESO? These deal directly with electricity providers, EPCOR, Enmax, etc. Think about the cumulative effect of these, on an already stressed grid! From what I've garnered, the GofA is aware of the possibly of these Mega corps trying to split up operations and are working on closing loopholes surrounding this. Meta's plan is to provide as much power as it uses back to the grid and this includes wind/solar, lots to research here! Look forward to the documentary or docuseries!
