You didn't need another reason to think Calgary City Councilors were out of control...
But here it is anyways!
Now, I don’t want to paint all of our city councilors with the same brush, but there is a reason that there is a term called, the Hateful 8, that is applied to 8 of them, including Mayor Gondek.
And whether Landon and volunteers are successful at their recall bid, they have ensured that Jyoti will be a One and Done, Mayor for the city.
Sure, there is still some old establishment and union support for her, but given what has surfaced over the last couple of months, Calgarians are now more awake to the woken and horrible policies supported by our Union Placed Mayor.
Problem is…there are still 7 more of these rascals that need to be dealt with…as well as others that may want a deeper grab into the cookie jar.
You see, in the most expensive time to be a Canadian, where Alberta has fended off a lot of issues that are being faced in BC and Ontario…drugs, crime, violence, car theft…but we’re still predominantly Conservative without the adage of Progressive in our title.
Classic Conservative.
Fiscal Conservative.
And a lot of that changed, in both Edmonton and Calgary through Municipally Purchased Elections by Union Funding. Surprisingly, buying mayors and councilors is rather cheap on this scale with totals being only around $2 Million…that’s a whole other story.
Anyways…City Council for Calgary had an opportunity under the failing leadership of Mayor Jyoti Gondek to simply NOT hike the property taxes and opt for a reduction in spending. In fact, there was even talk about a Tax Rebate for 2024.
We all know how that turned out…
But somehow…in looking for savings, they actually found an additional $311 Million worth of SPENDING that they want to implement.
WHAT?
Rick Bell, busted this out last week and while he does state that the city would prefer to get this amount from the province, they are actually looking at other ways to Tax Calgarians, instead of trying to come up with this amount via property taxes:
He goes on to say…
It’s not happening today. It’s not happening tomorrow. It may never happen.
But you don’t wait until the very last moment before you warn people about what could happen.
Here goes.
Earlier this week, on the same day the majority of Calgary city council voted for a big fat tax hike they also put their hand up for another idea.
Without seemingly to have any idea as to what this $311 Million will go towards…Rick explains that they’ve gone ahead and brainstormed some ideas, beyond their specific authority.
One of the fastest options being a Municipal Fuel Tax, in a similar way that Montreal already does this…more expensive gas on top of the more expensive gas we’ll already be paying, thanks to the Carbon Sham Tax, goes up on April 1st, 2024…as well as April 1st, 2025.
Imagine the city trying to throw a few more cents onto this…
But you see, once this door gets opened, there is no stopping where fees and additional taxes could hit us, Rick states:
Personal income tax, corporate income tax, occupational privilege tax, road pricing, advertising tax, telecommunications franchise fees, municipal general sales tax, accommodation tax, parking tax, fuel tax, tobacco tax, amusement tax, land transfer tax, alcohol tax, cannabis tax, vehicle registration tax, insurance premium tax and carbon tax.
As well as:
“A vehicle registration tax would positively reinforce efforts to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions and traffic and parking congestion,” say the deep-thinkers.
These people believed that in 2021, they could have raised $420 Million and this is with the idea of implementing a Provincial GST of 1%.
A 46-page chapter on new taxes and fees was dropped into Gondek to forward over to the Province - Premier Smith and Ric McIver.
And while Bell thinks that this will not be approved under a Conservative Government, he’s not so sure what this would look like if run through an NDP house of Nenshi…where Nenshi had more than doubled property taxes over the course of a decade.
Would he approve it?
Would this also impact Edmonton?
Red Deer? Lethbridge? Medicine Hat? Grand Prairie? Fort Mac?
Will he even get the chance?
I think, like Rick Bell, that we best start having some of these conversations of our own…watching for these fingers reaching for the cookie jar lid…and simply letting them know that while a lot of Calgarians may be asleep, a lot more are awake now and we’re simply not going to put up with this.
We’ve got a lot of battles to face on affordability, including keeping the roof over our heads and the heads of our families on a Provincial and Federal scale…but that doesn’t mean that we can drop the ball on the Municipal…we’ve already seen what this can create.
No…not my story - all credit to Rick, The Dinger, Bell on this one.
Just thought it’d be something that I should bring to your attention, incase you’d missed it.

I think its high time for every employed person to not go to work for a week. Stop the city completely!! Stop everything. ! No fact food places. No gas bars. No nothing!! Its also time for all canadians to with hold taxes.
Make the entire city come to a complete Stop.
Going to say it folks, you've got to get out of those cities!! If you can, I know it's not for everyone and they're coming for the rural folks too eventually but getting back to basics, simple living, huge garden, chickens, your own well, no city services yes but very low property taxes, no hidden fees here (heck don't even have cable). Love this off the beaten track living!!
